I have no taste and can read anything. How I judge stuff is by whether or not I want to reread something. However, there was one single story that I read way back when in Pros that I absolutely hated. It was in a zine entitled 'Delicious Agony, Vulgar Ecstasy'. I got rid of the zine...the only one in 1000 zines I own that I ditched. The problem is...like with The Pillory....you don't forget the awful stories. In the case of the Pillory...I could see possibility for a happy ending. I could see where misunderstandings were occurring...I had hope for a sequel that would put it right. The story I hated had no room for a happy ending. I did not want to know these people. For the first time I questioned the type of person the author was...who could debase the beloved characters like this. So, today I pick up Neon Rainbow Press collected slash and gen Pros stories from their???multi-media zines and what do I find...the hateful story. Now...the question is...should I read the damned thing to see if my memory is faulty (which, if it is not faulty...will reinforce the crap vision in my brain forever). I know about reading outside my comfort zone, I know about squicks, I know about the range of kinks in human sexuality. I understand that some writers and readers love their kinks but my memory of that story was visceral. I think I am going to have to read it so that I can get rid of this zine as fast as possible. If it is as I remember...the temptation to burn the damned thing will be high and for someone who anthropomorphizes inanimate objects like houses, cars, books...that is saying a lot. Things have life to me but ...well enough ranting. Better not eat lunch...have to read this one on an empty stomach. If I do read it all the way through...I might write about it again.

There were two stories. Both by M. E. Hand. Doyle's Training and The Trip. I read through Doyle's Training with an open mind. Not to my taste but I recognized the kink as not uncommon. Not worth rereading. The Trip was the story that had remained with me. It explained Doyle's Training and that it was done with Cowley's collusion. It gave a Bodie backstory that was different from any posited in any other story I had ever read and it showed the result of Doyle's Training (brainwashing). I made it to the last page when the story hit the twist that would not allow me to accept it as just another Bodie and Doyle story. Totally unacceptable to my mind on any level...that Bodie would do it, that Doyle would accept it...that in any way, shape or form this was a way of life that could exist between two sane people. The zine goes. I have read De Sade but using Bodie and Doyle in that way ....the end result was all three of the principal characters were not sane and to have them holding the kind of power of CI5 is a chilling thought. Hey, the silver lining is...I don't think the story is going to haunt me anymore because now I see that regardless of the names...they were not my Bodie and Doyle...in action or mentally and neither was Cowley...they were twisted so far out of shape as to be unrecognizable. This was a thin zine of only five slash stories collected from three multi-media zines and frankly I cannot believe that they were the only slash stories available for choice and for the editors to choose those two stories as fine examples of their publishing says something hinky to my mind. To publish them once is bad enough but a second time in this way was too much. A zine printed as a collection should reflect the best...the favourites. Its done and now to find a way to wash my mind out with soap.
